Living the good life

WHEN our goals are simple enough we have a better chance of making them real. That’s the message I took away from this couple living near New Plymouth on Aotearoa-New Zealand’s North Island.

Pat and Sandi live what to me seems an idyllic life. Set in a rural area, their house is a typical country dwelling Their garden is not. It abounds with fruit trees and vegetable gardens and has a large pen for their chooks (chickens, to non-Australians). Good soil management yields much of their daily food needs. They teach at a nearby school.

That is not all that makes their life enviable. Pat and Sandi are surfers. Like their food garden, surfing is integrated into their lives. The Pacific coast is nearby and they are regular visitors.

Gardening and surfing — simple things, pleasurable and beneficial in terms of a good diet and physical fitness. And… both bring Pat and Sandi close to nature.
